New Year, New You: Here’s what you need to know about growing your podcast

As a team at Podcast Discovery, we are always trying to stay ahead of the trends and influences in podcasting. The landscape is always changing, and trust us, we know it can feel hard to keep up… so here is a roundup of everything we learned in 2023 from each member of our team that we want everyone to know about going into 2024.

“Taking a break will lose you audience: if you’re not consistent with your publishing, there are plenty of podcasts lining up to take your place… Obviously you need a break, so fill the gap with best ofs, extended interviews, a repeat… or arrange an episode swap with a like-minded pod.” – Matt Hill

“Make sure you have a website with links to all your destinations, a place people can listen, and also your contact details and socials. You should own your shows name, don’t depend on links elsewhere.” – Matt Deegan

“Building a community is important. People like to feel they belong and so nurturing your “pod squad” will help grow an audience – no matter what kind of show you make.” – Catherine Carr

“Leverage your guests’ social media. Create assets your guests will want to share; – clips where they’re clever or funny, images where they look great. Then use social media best practice to achieve the maximum impact and reach within their followers.” – Josh Divney

“Podcasts need marketing more than ever. With so many podcast listeners now “at capacity” with an almost endless supply of great content to choose from, it’s increasingly hard to stand out. Persuading a listener to drop something they’re already listening to in order to spend time with your show instead takes patience and persistence.” – Patrick Carter

“Be smart about investing where you can to make sure you continuously focus on the content of your show first. Ultimately, your content is what matters most and your talent is what will bring you your audience. If you can find anyone else to help you along the way to grow your pod, go for it – whether its just feedswaps or a whole production crew.” – Anya G Spence
